Last week the Catering by Seasons team had an opportunity to attend the “Summer Solstice Soiree,” an educational event hosted by the ILEA Greater Washington, DC Chapter at the beautiful U.S. National Arboretum. It was a wonderful evening!

Approximately 65 guests, from the event industry, enjoyed music, refreshing cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres before the program began. The topic was Risk Planning for Outdoor Events. The panel of speakers included (from left to right in the chairs) Art Miesemer, RMA Worldwide Chauffeured Transportation; Dan Cohen, Digital Event Associates; Jay Collins, Infinite Power; Daniela Ricci, Occasions Caterers; and Natalie Thomas, McNeese Thomas Group.

When planning outdoor events, it’s important to remember that a Plan B is always necessary. Each panelist spoke about their Plan Bs and shared humorous stories about how possible disasters had been avoided. President of the ILEA DC Chapter, Sarah Cissna, moderated the discussion and shared a favorite moment from it: “My favorite mental image from the panel was one my brain conjured in response to the conversation about clear-top tents creating a greenhouse effect of warmth inside – I pictured guests, food, and décor alike all melting into puddles like the Wicked Witch of the West!”

The U.S. National Arboretum is considered by some to be Washington’s secret garden. It is 446 acres of a living museum dedicated to world-renowned flora collections. There are six separate locations on the grounds that might make the perfect spot for your next event. If you are interested in planning your next outdoor event at the arboretum, contact Courtney McNeese, Special Event Venue Manager, at (202) 297-6427.
